Our Adult Career Training Program engages Kent County adults experiencing under- and unemployment in tuition-free career training. Through professionally led instruction, leadership and personal development curriculum, externships with local employers, and on-site supports, students prepare to take national certification exams and enter in-demand career fields.

“In the Adult Career Training Program, we are connecting students with pathways to sustained family economic security through meaningful careers. So when a student graduates from the program, they aren’t locked into one position, they’re starting a career that will grow with them,” said Director of Workforce Development Renida Clark.

Laterse Gilliam now works as a medical biller and coder at Grand Valley Medical Specialists.

One of these former students is Laterse Gilliam, a 2022 Adult Career Training Program graduate. Before training to become a medical coder at WMCAT, Laterse was working a job where she felt like just a number without any options for the future. Now a medical biller and coder with Grand Valley Medical Specialists, she knows her employers are invested in her growth through professional development opportunities and benefits.

“Once you actually get done with [the program], you open all types of doors to every opportunity that you actually want,” said Laterse.

Laterse addressed her fellow students in a speech at her graduation last June, noting the challenge of learning a new career, but celebrated their shared accomplishment and the community of support they had at WMCAT. “We gained knowledge and so many friendships,” Laterse said of the program. “We had support from our … classmates, mentors, and teachers.”
