Fashion Design

During the 2022-2023 Teen Arts + Tech Program, the fashion design studio partnered with the Grand Rapids Art Museum (GRAM), allowing students to take inspiration from the museum’s exhibitions and permanent collection to create original fashion designs. WMCAT teen artists produced three series of designs, each inspired by a different set of artworks (below), and concluded the semester with a fashion show in the GRAM’s auditorium.

The Jim Henson Exhibition: Imagination Unlimited

Teen artists were given three criteria for designs in this series: garments must be inspired by the Jim Henson Exhibition, garments must be interactive, and garments must have three appliqués.

Aside from wearable garments shown at the fashion show, students also constructed hats that were shown at WMCAT’s Teen Arts + Tech Program winter 2022 exhibition.

Blue White

This series of jacket designs is inspired by Ellsworth Kelly’s “Blue White” which hangs noticeably in the Grand Rapids Art Museum’s entrance.

Teen artists were given three criteria for designs in this series: garments must be inspired by “Blue White”, garments must have appliqués and functioning closures, and garments must generate an understated design.

Avant-Garde: Sustainability

This series explores the avant-garde approach and was inspired by selected pieces from the Grand Rapids Art Museum’s permanent collection. Teen artists also explored themes of sustainability and the environmental impact of humans through this series’ designs.
