After moving to Grand Rapids, Imelda Hay was at a standstill, “I was lost being in a new city and not really feeling like I had much I was focused on.” Imelda discovered Step Year at WMCAT and was intrigued by an opportunity that encouraged self-discovery in a supportive environment.

“[My favorite part of Step Year was] making the connection with Rosie and Renida as mentors. And knowing that now I have two more people who are rooting for me.” These connections helped Imelda build the confidence needed to pursue new opportunities.

“It’s almost like if LinkedIn was a real physical thing.”

Through mentorship from WMCAT staff, Imelda has gained an openness to exploring new opportunities, knowing the support system she’s built at WMCAT will be cheering her on.

Imelda is taking her future one confident step at a time. Currently, she’s studying at Grand Rapids Community College and participating in fellowship with the Institute for College Access and Success. With the support she’s gained and the plan she’s made at WMCAT, Imelda is confident that taking the next steps will align
with her skills and values.
