In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, we at the West Michigan Center for Arts + Technology (WMCAT) have made the difficult decision to postpone WMCAT 20/20: Exploring Conflicting Visions for the Future, scheduled for June 4 and 5 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Like so many, we have carefully monitored public health guidance, studied the progression of preventative measures taken, and listened to the growing concerns of our community.
Our decision to postpone is out of care for the well-being of those directly involved in the event and the communities of which they are a part. This step is foremost taken out of concern for physical health, but with an awareness of mental and emotional health; we will be rightfully limited in our individual and collective ability to engage challenging ideas and conversations in the wake of a crisis that has forced us to face unprecedented decisions and circumstances.
The incredible importance of this content, however, is why we will postpone – not cancel. This pandemic has highlighted the systemic and structural inequities preventing prosperity, while revealing renewed energy for equitable change and commitment to the idea that our personal well-being is tied to that of our community. As we weather this time of healthcare overwhelm, educational uncertainty, social isolation, and economic hardship, the intention we have for this gathering will be more relevant than ever.
We look forward to sharing an updated plan once it has been confirmed. At that time registration will resume, and we will work individually with ticket holders who may have a schedule conflict. We hope you will join us to experience new ideas and voices, build relationships, and sharpen your vision of community.
