Now more than ever, many young people are seeking spaces for connection and creativity. Amidst a demanding academic schedule and pressure to plan their future, Bee Sutherby needed a place to be creative and build belonging. After hearing about the WMCAT Teen Arts + Tech Program, Bee knew it was exactly what they were looking for. “I love that WMCAT can give me the space just to do something for fun.”
“It’s just really nice to come into a space where it really does feel like a second home. You have the freedom to be yourself.”
Though always interested in art, the Teen Arts + Tech Program gave Bee dedicated time to explore their passions. It became a space to build creative confidence, have fun with new friends, and show up as their authentic self. “I come in and everybody is so welcoming. Everywhere I turn, somebody is smiling. And if someone’s having a down day, someone’s always checking in.”
Through WMCAT’s supportive community, Bee connected with teaching artists who encouraged them to join artist markets — building the confidence to share and sell their work across West Michigan. Now in 11th grade, Bee has plans to attend the University of Michigan. Until then, you’ll find them in the ceramics studio sharing their newfound confidence with others.
