Ceramics that shine! Teen artists added light to their sculpture projects.
Students in the Ceramics I and II studios built on their skills to create large-scale lamps and lanterns that depict an image in the negative space. Teen artists hand built a base around either a lamp base or a tea light to illuminate their design.
Teen artists began by sketching their design and rolling and cutting slabs to the shape of their lantern (cylinder or rectangle). Once they carved the design on a flat slab of clay, they scored and slipped pieces of clay together, creating an upright lamp. The pieces were then dried and fired. Students were then tasked with glazing their piece, making sure to consider the reflection of the light in their glaze choice. See their work below!
